Lead Free Brass
One of the best materials for fittings is brass. Brass fittings are widely used for numerous industrial and plumbing applications - many that need to carry water for potable applications.
Lead-Free Brass Regulations
Over the past several years, federal and state governments have enacted laws to limit people’s exposure to chemicals in potable water.
The most sweeping of these laws was an amendment to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, redefining “lead-free” as a maximum weighted lead content of 0.25% on the wetted surface which deliver potable (read “drinkable”) water of plumbing products.
The Lead Free Law
On January 4, 2014 the "Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act," more commonly known as the Lead Free law (U. S. Bill S. 3874), went into effect. The new national mandate requires that every pipe, fixture, and fitting used to convey water for potable use contain less than 0.25% of lead by weight.
